”International Women’s Day is a global celebration of the achievements of women. To highlight the excellent work women do in the heritage and conservation sector the SPAB caught up with women on site, at their offices or in their workshops to find out why they love their jobs and what buildings inspire them.

The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (The SPAB) was founded by William Morris in 1877 to counteract the highly destructive ‘restoration’ of medieval buildings being practised by many Victorian architects.”

Preservation Training at Williamsburg High School for Architecture and Design

As part of a long term commitment to preservation training in the United States, World Monuments Fund is an industry partner to Williamsburg High School for Architecture and Design (WHSAD), supporting the school’s efforts to prepare students for internships, jobs, and other learning experiences in the field of historic preservation. Through the Preservation in Practice series, field schools, and summer internships, WMF helps supplement the classroom experience with a range of activities that provide students with hands-on training and site-based learning. Other partners in these activities include historic house museums, Green-Wood Cemetery, architecture and engineering firms, Park Avenue Armory, and many other organizations, including a 100-year old stone-work company. .World Monuments Fund  www.wmf.org

Robin Hood Gardens: Requiem For A Dream

”After decades of controversy, Alison and Peter Smithson’s monumental housing estate in Poplar, East London, is finally being emptied of tenants in preparation for its demolition. The blocks will eventually be replaced by a quiver of anodyne towers designed by AEDAS. The AR’s History Editor Tom Wilkinson takes a final look at this landmark of Brutalism, tracing the context of its creation, the vagaries of its reputation, and exploring the unloved, but not unlovely spaces around it, concluding that Robin Hood Gardens is a reminder of architecture’s potential in an age of austerity.” The Architectural Review

”London is the most international and vibrant city there is, probably worldwide,” says Spanish designer Jaime Hayon, who lived in London for three years.
Eero Koivisto of Swedish studio Claesson Koivisto Rune agrees. ”It’s truly multicultural in the same way New York is,” he says.
